Pat Ferns, President of Ferns Productions Inc. and Principal of the International Institute for Television and Media Leadership, is a prominent figure in the television and media industry.
Pat has organized and consulted for various international events, including the CNEX Chinese Documentary Forum and the China International Conference of Science and Education Producers. He has played a pivotal role in fostering documentary culture, notably with the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, China.
With over five decades of experience, he has produced numerous acclaimed television and new media events, such as the Banff Television Festival and nextMEDIA.
In addition, he has also spearheaded successful factual mini-series like "Captain Cook: Obsession and Discovery" and "Darwin’s Brave New World." A renowned speaker, Pat created the first public pitching forum, a platform that has been taken up all over the globe. He is recognized for his efforts in promoting a Canadian presence in television and pioneering independent production in Canada.
Throughout his career, Pat has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Academy Achievement Award and membership in The Order of Canada.
His contributions extend to film production, strategic consultation, and event management. Ferns resides in Shirley, BC.

Pat is the principal organizer/consultant for the CNEX Chinese Documentary Forum in Taipei, now entering its fifteenth year. He has also consulted to the China International Conference of Science and Education Producers, and for over 20 years guided the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival, China to become the country’s official national documentary event.
He served for twenty years as the Host/Moderator of CoPro in Tel Aviv; Pat was instrumental in the launch and development of RomaFictionFest, a world gathering of drama experts. Pat is a well-known speaker at events in Canada and internationally.
At Banff he created the Market Simulation, a ‘public pitching’ format which will celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2025. This became an international event at NATPE (’93), MIPCOM (’94) and MIP-TV (’95), and was subsequently picked up or adapted by industry events around the world, including IDFA and Hot Docs.
Pat has moderated pitching events across all media genres on five continents, in over thirty countries and some sixty cities.
During his career, Pat has produced some of the world's leading television and new media industry events. These include the Banff Television Festival, the World Congress of Science Producers, the World Congress of History Producers, the World Congress of Arts Producers & Performance, nextMEDIA-The International New Media Festival, News World International and the Alliance Atlantis Banff Television Executive Program as well as IITL’s Media Executive Leadership Programs in Asia, Australia and Europe.
Pat was Vice-President of the Victoria Film Festival and the Treasurer and chair of the Way Forward Committee for the Royal & McPherson Theatres Society.
He is a member of the Honorary Circle of Canada’s National Ballet School and an Honorary Trustee of Wildlife Preservation Trust Canada.
